What the Lights on an Elkay ezH2O Station Are Telling You
Every filtered ezH2O bottle filling station reports its own health through a small set of indicators. Knowing how to read them turns a mystery service call into a two-minute fix. Here is what the signals mean and what to do about each one.
The filter monitor: green, yellow, red
- Green: the cartridge is within its rated capacity. Nothing to do.
- Yellow: capacity is running out. Order the replacement now so the swap happens on your schedule, not the filter's. For standard stations that is the 51300C WaterSentry cartridge.
- Red: rated capacity is exhausted. Water still flows, but the certified lead and microplastics reduction can no longer be counted on. Swap the cartridge and reset the monitor.

Light stays red after a filter change
The monitor does not detect the new cartridge by itself; it is a counter that must be reset. The reset procedure is model-specific (a button on the board on some units, a sensor sequence on others), so check the manual for your exact model. Until it is reset, the light reports the old cartridge's life.
The green bottle counter
The ticker above the filling nook counts bottles saved from landfill. It is a sustainability display, not a service indicator, but schools love it, and a frozen counter is often the first thing users notice when a sensor needs cleaning.
Bottle filler will not dispense
Work through the basics before calling service:
- Sensor obstruction. The filler is activated by an infrared sensor in the alcove. Clean the sensor window; grime and stickers are the top cause of dead or phantom dispensing.
- Power. Sensor-activated fillers need power even on non-refrigerated units. Check the breaker and the outlet behind the unit.
- Water supply. Confirm the building shutoff to the unit is fully open.
- 20-second timeout. Continuous dispense stops automatically after about 20 seconds as an anti-flood measure. Remove and re-present the bottle.
Refrigerated unit is dispensing warm
Check clearance first: coolers need airflow around the cabinet vents, and a blocked vent overworks the compressor until it cuts out on thermal protection. Give the unit ventilation space, allow it time to recover, and if warm water persists have a technician check the refrigeration circuit.
Keep a spare cartridge on the shelf and most of the calls above disappear. Cartridges for every current Elkay platform are in our filters collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Elkay EZH2O bottle filling station not working?
Start with sensor obstruction ā the infrared sensor window gathers grime over time and is the most common reason an Elkay ezH2O Bottle Filling Station stops responding. After cleaning the sensor window, check that the unit has power and that the water shutoff behind it is fully open. A red filter indicator light may also signal that a depleted cartridge is restricting flow ā swap the cartridge and reset the monitor counter.
What is the filter on the Elkay ezH2O bottle filling station?
Filtered Elkay ezH2O models use a WaterSentry cartridge rated to reduce certified contaminants including lead, microplastics, and sediment. The standard 51300C is rated at 3,000 gallons (12 months); the 51600C handles 6,000 gallons for high-volume sites. The unit's built-in monitor tracks remaining capacity and steps through green, yellow, and red as the cartridge nears the end of its rated life.
Are water bottle filling stations filtered?
Many commercial bottle filling stations include certified filtration, but not all ā some models are sold without a filter for buildings that treat water upstream at the source. All Elkay ezH2O filtered models include a WaterSentry cartridge and a three-stage color indicator to track cartridge life. Browse filtered bottle filling stations to compare certified models by contaminant reduction rating and gallon capacity.
